Putney’s Brighter Summer

Putney’s Brighter Summer is a collaborative effort to provide free programs for kids in Putney! Free events for Putney kids means opportunities to reconnect and recharge. Putney’s Brighter Summer will allow our kids to make new memories and emerge from a challenging year hopeful, resilient, and with renewed connections to their peers. Check out the full calendar of summer events. All events are free and open to all area kids!

Collaborating organizations include the Town of Putney, Putney Public Library, Putney Community Cares, and Food4Kids (Putney Foodshelf).

LOCATIONS

  • Putney Public Library is located at 55 Main Street in Putney. All library events will be held outdoors at the library unless otherwise noted.
  • Putney Pool is located at 172 Westminster Road in Putney. All pool events will be held outdoors at the pool unless otherwise noted.
  • Putney Community Cares is located at 54 Kimball Hill in Putney. All PCCI  events will be held outdoors on the back lawn unless otherwise noted.

SAFETY & LOGISTICS INFO

  • All events listed under Putney’s Brighter Summer will take place outside. In the event of severe weather, schedule changes will be posted to this website. Bring a mask for attendees ages 3 and up as you may be asked to use it at some events. 
  • Free Programs All Summer Long:
    • Free Access to the Putney Pool for everyone (not just Putney residents), open 12-6pm daily
    • Free Daily Snacks at Putney Pool, 2 snacks, 1 frozen item and 1 water free every day
    • Free Weekly Food4Kids Pop-up Market at Putney Pool, 3-4pm on Thursdays, 2:30-3:30pm

  • NEW DATE!! Wednesday August 25th, 4pm @ Putney Community Cares – Your Inner Ninja: Sarah Allain will introduce breath work and basic moves to bring out your inner ninja for children ages 6-10. 
  • Wednesday August 25th, 7pm @ Putney Pool – MOVIE NIGHT: Scoob!  
  • Saturday August 28th, 7pm @ Putney Pool – MOVIE NIGHT: The Croods: A New Age 
  • Sunday August 29th, Close of Summer Dance Party 2-5pm @ Putney Pool: Swim and dance as we celebrate the close of summer! We will have a DJ from 2-4pm, and a BBQ with burgers from Morse Brook Farm from 4-5. The Putney Diner will be preparing the BBQ, which is sponsored by Food4Kids!

  • Friday July 16th, 11am @ Putney Public Library Ask A Scientist: Professor Jamie Tanner has studied animals her whole life.  Jamie will bring some cool animal items for us to explore. She will teach us about how different animal skulls influence how animals eat, see and behave. Jamie’s favorite animal is the hyena. Come with questions about your favorite animal!

  • Sunday July 25th, 1pm @ Putney Pool/Forest For Learning Entrance – Forest for Learning Scavenger Hunts: Join local ecologists Lionel Chute and Dawn Zweig for fun adventures in the Forest For Learning to explore and learn about plants and animals that inhabit this wonderful area. Explorations will be through scavenger hunts designed for multiple ages. There will be a series of three different scavenger hunt activities offered on different days throughout the summer; join us for one or all three! Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear long pants and close-toed shoes.

  • Wednesday July 28th, 11am @ Putney Public Library – Incredible Insects: Insects are the largest group of animals in the world. They are found almost everywhere on the planet – from mountain tops to underground caves. Because they live all around us, they are easy and fun to study. Join Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC) for this exciting morning of insect investigations and activities learning about insect anatomy, life cycles, and adaptations. Leave the workshop with more ideas that you can make or do at home.

  • Friday, July 30th, 11am @ Putney Public Library – All about GOATS!: We will read stories about goats, learn about goats, visit with actual live goats and taste test goat cheese! The Retreat Farm will be visiting with their special goat friends!
  • Sunday August 1st, 10am @ Putney Central School Garden – Smoothies from the Food4Kids Garden: Check out the Food4Kids garden, ride the smoothie bike and try out a refreshing drink! Sally Fletcher has been working on the Food4Kids garden all summer and will share ideas on making smoothies from the garden!

  • Wednesday, August 4th, 11am @ Putney Public Library- Summer Reading Closing Party with Story Teller : A free book give-away and storytelling from the Children’s Literacy Foundation will help us celebrate our time reading and learning together. Readers will also receive yummy animal treats to take home and enjoy.  Submit your BINGO sheet for a chance to win some awesome prizes!

  • Sunday August 8th, 10am @ Putney Community Cares – Children’s Yoga: Melissa Dawson presents an exploration of yoga poses and concertos through playful games, stories and songs for children ages 5-10.
  • Sunday August 8th, 11am @ Putney Community Cares – Preteen/Teen Yoga: Melissa Dawson will teach yoga poses/sequences and mindfulness strategies with a method accessible to adolescents, ages 11-14.  Experience a guided meditation to calm the overly active mental and emotional system as part of the class.
  • Sunday August 8th, 1-2:30pm @ Putney Pool/Forest For Learning Entrance – Forest for Learning Scavenger Hunts: Join local ecologists Lionel Chute and Dawn Zweig for fun adventures in the Forest For Learning to explore and learn about plants and animals that inhabit this wonderful area.   • Wednesday August 11th, 4pm @ Putney Community Cares – Family Ukelele Concert with Stu Fuchs: Stu Fuchs is a heart centered, award winning musician and teaching artist. Join us for a family ukulele concert!
  • Sunday August 15th, 10:30am @ Putney Community Cares – Indian Music with Arun Ramamurthy:  Next Stage visiting artist Arun Ramamurthy is a versatile violinist, educator and organizer based in Brooklyn, NY. His music is rooted in his lifelong training of South Indian Carnatic music and influenced by his various musical interests growing up in New Jersey. Join us for an Indian music concert on the lawn!

    • Free Swimming Lessons at Putney Pool, first come first served, registration required.
    • Free Breakfast & Lunch for children under 18 available for pick up under the white tent in front of Putney Library, 10:30-11:15am, June 21st-August 20th
    • Free Books & Craft Bags give-away for summer readers on Wednesdays & Fridays at Putney Library from July 7th-August 4th
