Sheila Garrett’s Rail Pass Adventure at Putney Library

November 7, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Tuesday, November 7th at 6:30pm

Last January, Amtrak advertised a sale on their USA Rail Passes and Sheila Garrett bought one: 10 train trips over 30 days to over 500 potential destinations across the country. Then the adventure began! First it required lots of planning, then acquiring specific tickets.

Sheila left New England on April 26, traveling almost 8,000 miles in one month, for only $300, stopping to visit friends and family, in New Orleans, Albuquerque, LA and coastal CA, then up to Seattle and Whidbey Island in Puget Sound. They returned through the north country watching the smoke-filled mountains and cities around the Great Lakes, home by way of Springfield, MA.

Come hear about Sheila’s travels – “…what I love (and sometimes find annoying) about trains – the vast array of experiences – and the wonders of what Amtrak has to offer, from culturally diverse companions to spectacular scenery, graffiti and urban encampments to encounters with climate change.”

Sheila Garrett is a retired high school teacher, gardener and music lover. They live half the year here in Putney, off-grid and the other half housesitting in Jaffrey, NH. A member of Putney Friends Meeting (Quaker), Sheila is a life -long social and racial justice activist.
