SUMMARY:The Pursuit of Happiness with Meg Mott
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, a new nation was brought forth by a People who had the gall to think they could govern themselves. As long as each citizen worked to improve their character\, the nation as a whole would stay free. The term of art for this personal improvement was the Pursuit of Happiness. To be a happy person was to be less reactive and more philosophical\, less prone to domination and more interested in dialogue. \nSadly\, few today understand what is meant by the Pursuit of Happiness. Instead of emotional intelligence\, most Americans see happiness as a feeling\, not a component of human flourishing. We’ll look at what the Pursuit of Happiness originally meant\, which civic virtues were promoted in Vermont\, and how we might promote more happiness in today’s politics.

SUMMARY:The Basics of Estate Planning with Edward A. Dimayuga
DESCRIPTION:What happens to your property when you die — and who decides? In this presentation\, Vermont estate planning attorney Edward A. Dimayuga walks through the basics of wills\, trusts\, and estate planning in plain English. Topics include how a will works and what happens if you die without one\, the difference between a will and a trust and when a trust makes sense\, how to make sure your assets actually reach the people you intend\, and common mistakes that can derail even a well-intentioned plan. Whether you are just starting to think about estate planning or have documents you haven’t looked at in years\, this presentation will give you a practical framework for the decisions ahead. \nEd has centered his practice around helping people plan for themselves and their loved ones. In times of need\, he assists families in carrying out these plans with care and compassion. His practice is exclusively in the preparation of Wills and trusts\, powers of attorney and Advance Directives\, and assisting clients with probate and trust administration\, guardianships\, and long-term care Medicaid planning. \nEd previously focused his practice in the areas of estate planning and elder law in Florida and brings extensive experience. Before establishing his private practice he worked for the Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association in Orlando\, Florida\, where he assisted the indigent and disabled\, children in foster care\, and military veterans in need. \nHe is an active member of the Vermont and Florida bars and has also practiced in Kansas and Missouri. He completed his undergraduate studies at Boston College and earned his law degree from Tulane Law School in 2003. \nEd and his wife\, Jennifer\, recently relocated to southern Vermont to raise their four children. They are looking forward to enjoying all of Vermont’s seasons and can’t wait to learn to ski and snowboard!
