Dummerston author, Cheryl Wilfong, lives within the Putney zip code. Her newest book Long Haul: A Historical Novel tells the story of her great-grandfather who came down with the Spanish flu in 1918 and died two years later of complications.

“It’s Covid deja-vu, all over again,” she says. Early in the Covid pandemic, people with the mysterious long-Covid were called long-haulers.

Cheryl will read a few sections of her novel and then talk about the process of learning to write fiction after 30 years of writing non-fiction.

Long Haul tells the story of George, a Hoosier farmer who develops a “long-haul” case of the Spanish flu, which burdens his wife Vi. Their Christian Science daughter, son-in-law, and their many children don’t believe in sickness or death or masking.

George and Vi’s spoiled 23-year-old son, Aldus, loves life in the fast lane and nearly bankrupts them. They are sincere Christians, but George has a secret sin, and Vi fails the Corinthians test of love.
Cheryl is the author of a historical travel book, Following the Nez Perce Trail. She has written award-winning gardening and mindfulness books and blogs—The Meditative Gardener and Garden Wisdom 365 Days. She wrote one excellent Dharma book—Breast Cancer Meets Mindfulness.
Cheryl attended Jan Frazier’s writing groups at Margo Torrey’s home for decades where she wrote travelogue and memoir with an emphasis on her spiritual path. She has self-published a dozen collections of her writings, so she is happy to talk about self-publishing.

During the autumn of her life, she is switching gears to write about her family legacy—both factual and fictional.
