SUMMARY:Putney Big Tree Quest
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Putney Big Tree Quest Kickoff event at the Putney Library on Monday\, Sept. 12\, 6-7 pm. \nTrees for Good\, the Putney Public Library\, the Putney Conservation Committee and members of the Putney education\, forestry\, and art communities are partnering to host a Big Tree Quest in Putney\, Vermont Sept. 15 – Nov. 1\, 2022\, inspired by a similar contest in Tunbridge in 2019. \nWhy a Big Tree Quest? To get us outside seeing the trees in our community\, to honor the big trees that play such an important role in the forest ecosystem\, in climate change mitigation\, in the nurturing of young trees\, and in the storage of carbon. And maybe even to put a Putney tree on the Vermont Big Tree list! \nWhat do you do for a Big Tree Quest? You head out and search for the largest tree you can find of the many species in Putney. If biggest isn’t your thing\, how about searching for Best Tree Pose\, Best Tree Face\, Tree Superhost\, or submitting your TreeTrek story (the longest or most interesting single-day human-powered tree discovery expedition). There’s also a category for Tree Art! \nSubmit online at https://form.jotform.com/222408380354048. Find submission forms on the Putney Library website http://putneylibrary.org/events-and-classes/putney-big-tree-quest/. Or just go out find a big tree\, measure the circumference at 4.5 feet off the ground\, and submit circumference\, tree species\, tree location\, your name\, email and phone #\, and\, if possible\, a photo of the tree to putneybigtree@gmail.com. \nAt the Sept.12 Kickoff event\, local forester Andrew Morrison will demonstrate tree measuring technique\, Michael Clough will visit with live forest animals from the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum\, Ines Zeller Bass from Sandglass Theater will introduce a tree spirit art-making workshop for those aged 10 and up to be held on Sept. 24\, 2-4 at Sandglass Theater\, and Putney School faculty member Dawn Zwieg will offer hands-on fun ecology activities. Tree-themed treats will be available. Activities are appropriate for all ages. \nContest judges are forester Andrew Morrison and Putney Public Library Youth Services Librarian Julia von Ransom\, in collaboration with students from The Putney School and Putney Central School. These distinguished community members will head out into backyards and sugar bushes after November 1 to confirm the entries. Interested parties are invited to accompany the judges on these measurement visits. Prizes–items made with or inspired by local tree species–will be awarded at the Putney Big Tree Quest Wrap-up on November 15\, from 6-7 pm at the Putney Public Library. \nFind more information about Putney Big Tree Quest events–tree identification walks\, exploring our relationship with trees through art\, and more–on the Putney Public Library website (www.putneylibrary.org)\, or contact Evie Lovett and Paul Levasseur at putneybigtree@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:7pm-Susan Mills Reading
DESCRIPTION:Susan Mills Reads from On the Wings of a Hummingbird\nWednesday\, September 14th at 7pm \nJoin Newfane author\, Susan Mills\, for a reading of her new novel On the Wings of a Hummingbird on Wednesday\, September 14th at 7pm at Putney Public Library. Masks will be required for this indoor\, in-person event. As a Spanish-speaking immigration attorney for twenty years\, Mills prepared asylum cases for thousands of immigrants from Central America\, with a focus on unaccompanied minors. Some of her family members journeyed from the war-torn countryside of El Salvador to the U.S.\nWings of a Hummingbird\, her first novel\, is the story of 15-year-old Petra\, who must grow into the lessons of the Mayan hummingbird as she carves her future out of a childhood scarred by violence. \nPetra’s life has been upended by local gang violence in her small Guatemalan village. Her childhood friend Emilio had a hand in their friend Justina’s murder\, and his father is the local gang leader’s right-hand man. Betrayed by Emilio and abandoned by her mother who has fled to the U.S.\, Petra now fears for her own life. Petra ultimately flees to the U.S.\, but the pressures follow her there. As she attempts to reconcile with her mother over the abandonment\, Petra is alarmed that her mother disregards the danger when Emilio shows up near their home. The novel explores forgiveness and redemption\, how to heal oneself and find a future of integrity with friends and community who have participated in atrocities.\nNancy Braus from Everyone’s Books says: ” On the Wings of a Hummingbird is an essential read for anyone who wants to understand more deeply the reasons people leave their ancestral homes in Central America\, in this case Guatemala\, and make the dangerous journey north. The main character\, Petra\, is a smart\, thoughtful teen living with her caring indigenous grandparents in a small town in rural Guatemala where brutal gangs have been terrorizing residents\, especially young women. It becomes clear over time that her refusal to give in to gang demands is endangering her grandparents\, so she needs to flee to join her mother in the United States. The process of eluding the gangs and making a new life is a challenge\, but Petra’s insights into her experience will stay with the reader for a long time.”\nPutney Public Library is located at 55 Main St. in Putney\, VT. This event\, like all library programs\, is free and open to the public. Masks are required for this in-person\, indoor event.

SUMMARY:Edward Hitchcock: America’s First Dinosaur Expert
DESCRIPTION:The library will present a Zoom event for adults. Join biographer Bob McMaster for a presentation on the fascinating life of Connecticut Valley resident and scientist\, Edward Hitchcock: America’s First Dinosaur Expert. McMasters published the first biography of Hitchcock in 2021\, All the Light Here Comes from Above: The Life and Legacy of Edward Hitchcock. Hitchcock\, an Amherst College professor\, was not only one of the 19th century’s most eminent scientists\, but also the first scientist to find evidence of dinosaurs in North America. His landmark research on what he called the “fossil footmarks” of the Connecticut Valley led him to theorize that prehistoric ancient birds once roamed the planet.
