SUMMARY:Read To A Dog
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome therapy dog\, Keeper and his owner Abigail to the Library on Wednesdays from October 20th – November 17th\, 3:30 – 4:30.  Sign up for 15 minute slots by emailing julia@putneylibrary.org or drop in when space is available. \nTherapy dogs can help emerging and struggling readers by lending a nonjudgmental ear to listen. They can also help in lowering heart rates and stress hormones while stimulating parts of the brain that encourage social-emotional learning. \nKeeper is a two-year-old Labrador Retriever who is a certified therapy dog (with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs). To become certified\, he had to pass an initial obedience test as well as complete three supervised visits at several facilities.  Besides listening to stories read out loud his favorite activities are swimming\, rolling in mud puddles\, chasing squirrels and wrestling with his sister. \nAbigail Littlefield is Keeper’s owner/chauffeur\, who will always be found at the other end of his leash.  Keeper is her forth certified therapy dog; some of the places she has visited with past dogs are elementary schools\, hospitals\, nursing homes and colleges.  She is a retired college professor who lives in Westminster West where\, in addition to Keeper\, she has two more dogs\, a cat\, chickens and bees!

SUMMARY:Aging Gardens\, Aging Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:Please contact Emily for Zoom link: emily@putneylibrary.org or sign up for our newsletter for access to all of our events: http://putneylibrary.org/sign-up-for-our-email-newsletter/ \n  \nDo you look forward to spring for the beauty that your gardens produce? Do you love\nyour gardens but not the seemingly endless hours of maintenance that they demand?\nHave you ever found yourself resenting your gardens because their care prevents you\nfrom pursuing other interests? And finally\, have you come to the painful realization that\nyou and your gardens have aged and changed over time? \n“Aging Gardens\, Aging Gardeners” responds to these questions. It is intended to help\nall of us come to terms with our aging\, but very much beloved gardens. Ann presents\nstrategies for gardening more wisely: taking care of ourselves as we garden; assessing\nour home landscapes; prioritizing gardening tasks; managing mature plants; and\,\ncreating smaller\, simpler gardens. \nFor years\, our gardens have given us great joy. This talk offers us ways by which we\ncan continue to enjoy these beautiful spaces with much less work.\nAnn McEntee is a former Communications and Theatre professor. She left teaching to\nearn a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of New Mexico. While\nliving in Santa Fe\, she earned her certification as a Master Gardener\, and more\nrecently\, her Advanced Master Gardener certification. \nAnn currently teaches architectural and landscape history for Keene State College’s\nCALL (Cheshire Academy for Lifelong Learning) program and works part-time as a\nlandscape consultant. The former lead gardener at the Cathedral of the Pines\, she\npresents garden talks to area townships and organizations.
