SUMMARY:Putney Big Tree Quest
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Putney Big Tree Quest Kickoff event at the Putney Library on Monday\, Sept. 12\, 6-7 pm. \nTrees for Good\, the Putney Public Library\, the Putney Conservation Committee and members of the Putney education\, forestry\, and art communities are partnering to host a Big Tree Quest in Putney\, Vermont Sept. 15 – Nov. 1\, 2022\, inspired by a similar contest in Tunbridge in 2019. \nWhy a Big Tree Quest? To get us outside seeing the trees in our community\, to honor the big trees that play such an important role in the forest ecosystem\, in climate change mitigation\, in the nurturing of young trees\, and in the storage of carbon. And maybe even to put a Putney tree on the Vermont Big Tree list! \nWhat do you do for a Big Tree Quest? You head out and search for the largest tree you can find of the many species in Putney. If biggest isn’t your thing\, how about searching for Best Tree Pose\, Best Tree Face\, Tree Superhost\, or submitting your TreeTrek story (the longest or most interesting single-day human-powered tree discovery expedition). There’s also a category for Tree Art! \nSubmit online at https://form.jotform.com/222408380354048. Find submission forms on the Putney Library website http://putneylibrary.org/events-and-classes/putney-big-tree-quest/. Or just go out find a big tree\, measure the circumference at 4.5 feet off the ground\, and submit circumference\, tree species\, tree location\, your name\, email and phone #\, and\, if possible\, a photo of the tree to putneybigtree@gmail.com. \nAt the Sept.12 Kickoff event\, local forester Andrew Morrison will demonstrate tree measuring technique\, Michael Clough will visit with live forest animals from the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum\, Ines Zeller Bass from Sandglass Theater will introduce a tree spirit art-making workshop for those aged 10 and up to be held on Sept. 24\, 2-4 at Sandglass Theater\, and Putney School faculty member Dawn Zwieg will offer hands-on fun ecology activities. Tree-themed treats will be available. Activities are appropriate for all ages. \nContest judges are forester Andrew Morrison and Putney Public Library Youth Services Librarian Julia von Ransom\, in collaboration with students from The Putney School and Putney Central School. These distinguished community members will head out into backyards and sugar bushes after November 1 to confirm the entries. Interested parties are invited to accompany the judges on these measurement visits. Prizes–items made with or inspired by local tree species–will be awarded at the Putney Big Tree Quest Wrap-up on November 15\, from 6-7 pm at the Putney Public Library. \nFind more information about Putney Big Tree Quest events–tree identification walks\, exploring our relationship with trees through art\, and more–on the Putney Public Library website (www.putneylibrary.org)\, or contact Evie Lovett and Paul Levasseur at putneybigtree@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:THE GRAND RE-OPENING 2022: Reconnect with yourself\, your meditation practice and the world
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, we’ve weathered a long winter of frost and Covid. After all the shutting down and closing off\, it’s time to open up and reconnect with ourselves and the plentiful world around us\, so we can get back to making and imagining. Join us for a 4-session workshop and discussion group to explore the use of Mindfulness Meditation and various practices that enhance inspiration and presence. We’ll meet four times\, three Monday evenings in July\, beginning Monday\, July 11\, from 6:00-7:30 at the library–and the first Monday of August. If weather is good\, we’ll meet out back on the patio. If not\, we’ll meet inside the library or on Zoom\, depending on Covid numbers. \nMichelle Blake is a writer and poet who has published three novels with Putnam Penguin; poems and essays in the NY Times\, Tin House\, Ploughshares and many others; and a collaboration with visual artist Fran Forman. Together with Emily Zervas\, she developed the Writer in Residence program at the library (on Covid hold). Currently\, she is working in the Mindfulness Meditation Training Program to explore the relationship between meditation\, inspiration and creativity. \nPlease register for this event by emailing Michelle at: michelleblake09@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Constitution + Comics Camp
DESCRIPTION:Constitution + Comics Camp \nThe Putney Public Library is offering a free camp open to all area teens. Join us for Constitution + Comics Camp where we will read and debate excerpts from the US Constitution and Bill of Rights\, the Vermont Constitution\, Supreme Court decisions\, as well as graphic novels with historical and constitutional themes. We will then draw our own constitution comics and debate the issues in the context of 21st century schooling. Some of the topics we will dig into: What privacy rights do students have inside of school? Should schools be able to search student lockers? What about backpacks?\nBy the end of the week\, you’ll be able to cite Supreme Court cases\, explore counter-arguments\, and illustrate your basic rights through comics. Do you know what your privacy rights look like? Draw them and you won’t forget them. \nConstitution camp is led by Meg Mott PhD\, a former professor and constitutional scholar who successfully led our Free Speech for Teens Camp in the summer of 2021. \nMarek Bennett is a comics artist and a 2021 New Hampshire Governor’s Award for Arts in Education recipient. His work includes the graphic novel series\, The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby\, as well as drawing\, translating\, & editing for The Most Costly Journey (2021) with the bilingual El Viaje Project. \nConstitution + Comics Camp is hosted by the Putney Public Library at 55 Main St\, Putney\, VT. Camp will run June 27- July 1\, 10am -1 pm. Registration is now open but spaces are limited. https://putneylibrary.org/constitution-and-comics-camp/\nFor additional information please contact the library at julia@putneylibrary.org or 802-387-4407
