SUMMARY:Book Group: Lab Girl by Hope Jahren
DESCRIPTION:Copies of this book will be available at the library’s desk. \n  \n“An illuminating debut memoir of a woman in science; a moving portrait of a longtime friendship; and a stunningly fresh look at plants that will forever change how you see the natural world \nAcclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she’s studied trees\, flowers\, seeds\, and soil. Her first book is a revelatory treatise on plant life—but it is also so much more.\n\nLab Girl is a book about work\, love\, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together. It is told through Jahren’s remarkable stories: about her childhood in rural Minnesota with an uncompromising mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classroom’s labs; about how she found a sanctuary in science\, and learned to perform lab work done “with both the heart and the hands”; and about the inevitable disappointments\, but also the triumphs and exhilarating discoveries\, of scientific work. \nYet at the core of this book is the story of a relationship Jahren forged with a brilliant\, wounded man named Bill\, who becomes her lab partner and best friend. Their sometimes rogue adventures in science take them from the Midwest across the United States and back again\, over the Atlantic to the ever-light skies of the North Pole and to tropical Hawaii\, where she and her lab currently make their home. \nJahren’s probing look at plants\, her astonishing tenacity of spirit\, and her acute insights on nature enliven every page of this extraordinary book. Lab Girl opens your eyes to the beautiful\, sophisticated mechanisms within every leaf\, blade of grass\, and flower petal. Here is an eloquent demonstration of what can happen when you find the stamina\, passion\, and sense of sacrifice needed to make a life out of what you truly love\, as you discover along the way the person you were meant to be.” –Amazon

SUMMARY:The Use of Labyrinths for Peace of Mind\, Body & Spirit
DESCRIPTION:The Use of Labyrinths for Peace of Mind\, Body & Spirit \nOn Thursday\, March 30th at 7pm\, Sadelle Wiltshire will lead a program on the use of labyrinths at the Putney Public Library. Labyrinths can be used as a quieting\, healing form of walking meditation or a place for respite and reflection.  After a short film and talk she will have a labyrinth available to walk together as community.  Bring a concern\, intention or joy to release into the labyrinth. \nSadelle is a Certified Labyrinth Facilitator through Veriditas\, a non-profit organization that introduces the labyrinth as a tool for transformation of the mind\, body and spirit. She offers labyrinth walks and programs in the tri-state area for healing\, peace work and reflection and leads monthly labyrinth walks in Putney at Putney Friends Meeting and in Bellows Falls at Immanuael Retreat Center.  Sadelle is a New England representative of The Labyrinth Society.  She will provide a small canvas labyrinth to walk on site and will have a couple of “finger labyrinths” available for those who don’t wish to walk.  A short reflection time for journaling or talking will close the program. \nPutney Library is located at 55 Main Street in Putney\, VT. This program is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Book Group: A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
DESCRIPTION:Copies of this book will be available at the library’s desk. \n“Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles\, strict routines\, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? \nBehind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox\, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats\, unexpected friendship\, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. \nA feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand\, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year\,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist\, starred review).”

SUMMARY:Green Burial and The Vermont Law
DESCRIPTION:“Green Burial and The Vermont Law” at Putney Public Library \nGreen burial is an internment practice that seeks to minimize the negative impacts of burial while at the same time benefiting the environment. Many Vermonters are surprised to learn that green burial is not an option in Vermont. However\, a new bill introduced at the state house could change that by changing the mandatory minimum burial depth. \nOn Saturday\, February 25th at 3pm\, come to the Putney Public Library to learn about the bill\, why burial depth is important\, and the environmental benefits of green burial on rehabilitating\, preserving\, and conserving habitats. This program is hosted by end-of-life specialist and green-burial-educator Michelle Acciavatti and wildlife biologist and green-burial-educator Carl Anderson. It includes a screening of the short documentary\, “Dying Green”\, followed by a brief presentation about green burial in Vermont and a discussion. For more information visit vermontgreenburial.wordpress.com and direct questions to vermontgreenburial@gmail.com \nPutney Library is located at 55 Main Street in Putney\, VT. This program is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Book Group: The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson
DESCRIPTION:Copies of this book will be available at the library’s desk. \nFrom 1915 to 1970\, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people\, and gained access to new data and official records\, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded\, altering our cities\, our country\, and ourselves. \nWith stunning historical detail\, Wilkerson tells this story through the lives of three unique individuals: Ida Mae Gladney\, who in 1937 left sharecropping and prejudice in Mississippi for Chicago\, where she achieved quiet blue-collar success and\, in old age\, voted for Barack Obama when he ran for an Illinois Senate seat; sharp and quick-tempered George Starling\, who in 1945 fled Florida for Harlem\, where he endangered his job fighting for civil rights\, saw his family fall\, and finally found peace in God; and Robert Foster\, who left Louisiana in 1953 to pursue a medical career\, the personal physician to Ray Charles as part of a glitteringly successful medical career\, which allowed him to purchase a grand home where he often threw exuberant parties. \nWilkerson brilliantly captures their first treacherous and exhausting cross-country trips by car and train and their new lives in colonies that grew into ghettos\, as well as how they changed these cities with southern food\, faith\, and culture and improved them with discipline\, drive\, and hard work. Both a riveting microcosm and a major assessment\, The Warmth of Other Suns is a bold\, remarkable\, and riveting work\, a superb account of an “unrecognized immigration” within our own land. Through the breadth of its narrative\, the beauty of the writing\, the depth of its research\, and the fullness of the people and lives portrayed herein\, this book is destined to become a classic.
