SUMMARY:Mimi Yahn Reads from New Novel at Putney Library
DESCRIPTION:Mimi Yahn Reads from New Novel at Putney Library \nJoin longtime area resident and author\, Mimi Yahn (pen name Marie St. Pez)\, as she reads from her new novel\, Usurpation\, at Putney Public Library on Tuesday\, October 29th at 6:30pm. \nSet in 1997 and spanning two cities — Portland\, Oregon\, and New Orleans — Usurpation tells an emotional story of hardship and redemptive love through the lives of two families and through the eyes of Kitty Feliz\, whose experiences as a Black lesbian lyrically link the personal with the political\, and the heart with the mind. When her best friend’s son is murdered\, Kitty uncovers a racist scheme involving drug gangs\, police corruption\, and gentrification through the deliberate blighting of Portland’s historically Black district\, Albina. \nMarie St. Pez is the nom de plume of Springfield resident Mimi Yahn\, a long-time writer of essays\, short stories\, investigative articles\, and political blogs. Yahn lived in New Orleans and Portland\, Oregon\, during the 1990s and witnessed the impact of urban renewal schemes on Black communities in both cities and the origins of gentrification throughout Portland’s historically Black district\, Albina. \nPutney Public Library is located at 55 Main St in Putney\, VT. This event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Adoption Stories
DESCRIPTION:Adoption Stories with Jo Dery and Tamara Evanson \nThursday\, November 21\, 6:30pm at Putney Public Library \nAdoption Stories is a series of audio interviews with foster/adoptive families\, adult adoptees\, and adoption-support professionals in Windham County\, VT. \nChildren in foster care should be of concern to every Vermonter. There are 1\,300 children in foster care across Vermont – 150 of them are in Windham County. In the past decade\, our state’s child welfare system has been\, and remains\, under great stress. The themes touched on in these interviews include trauma\, grief\, resilience\, celebration\, and community – as well as the role that race\, class\, gender\, and the opioid and housing crises play in why children end up in foster care in Vermont. Through centering foster/adoptive children’s and family’s memories of the past and dreams for the future\, Adoption Stories paints a picture of the complex experience of these kids and families – full of love\, loss\, beauty\, and pain. \nThe Adoption Stories interviews are collected on the web at www.adoptionstoriesvt.com\, and available to listen to on the Podbean app. Adoption Stories was funded in part by a Brattleboro Town Arts Fund grant. \nJoin creators and foster/adoptive parents Jo Dery (artist and educator) and Tamara Evanson (licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist) at the Putney Library to learn about the project and hear from some of the participants.
