SUMMARY:Comics & Queerness in Vermont & Beyond with Tillie Walden
DESCRIPTION:From Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home to Charles Schulz’s Peanuts\, comics have been a part of American culture since print first began. But comics are no longer relegated just to the newspaper\, and as books like Maus or Persepolis have proven\, this is a golden age for graphic novel storytelling. What is even more exciting is how the comics industry is currently championing narratives for all identities and ages. \nVermont Cartoonist Laureate Tillie Walden presents a look at the intersection of indie comics with queer identity through her many graphic novels—from science fiction to memoir to historical retelling. Explore process and power through visual narrative and learn why comics are relevant to Vermonters and beyond. \nThis event is part of the Vermont Reads program through the Vermont Humanities Council.

SUMMARY:Putney Library Chapbook Book Binding
DESCRIPTION:email request@putneylibrary.org to sign up for this community workshop! \nIn 2019\, Putney Public Library began to assemble a chapbook of poetry by writers with creative ties to Vermont. The original goal was to hand bind and release the book in early summer of 2020. While the project was unexpectedly delayed\, the chapbook has made progress behind the scenes and we’re now in a position to gather and bind the book as originally intended! \n The book\, appropriately titled Time Capsule\, features the work of 18 poets\, pages marbled in community workshops in 2021\, and a beautiful letterpress cover. \nJoin letterpress artist and writer\, Candace Jensen\, and artist and library board member\, Amber Paris for a bookbinding workshop that will contribute to the finished books. We will use the Japanese stab binding process to complete the final steps in the book’s production.

SUMMARY:Breaking Silence: A Literary Journey with Women who Spoke Truth to Power with Elayne Clift
DESCRIPTION:Breaking Silence: A Literary Journey with Women who Spoke Truth to Power with Elayne Clift at Putney Public Library\nTuesday\, April 2nd at 6:30pm\nAward-winning writer Elayne Clift offers a presentation on women writers who were courageous enough to tell truth about their lives at Putney Public Library on Tuesday\, April 2nd at 6:30pm.\n“What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life?” Poet Muriel Rukeyser famously asked more than 50 years ago. Her answer? “The world would split apart.”\nThis presentation in honor of International Women’s Day offers a historical review of women writers who told the truth about their lives and created social change in important ways through courageous writing in various genres. Their insightful works changed women’s lives in the home\, the marketplace\, academia\, institutions\, and government. It’s an opportunity to learn from selected women writers who affected social history and progress in ways that affect us all through truth telling diaries\, autobiographies\, poems\, short stories and essays that helped shape a more enlightened world with respect to gender\, race\, class\, and caste. Please join us for a journey into Gender\, Literature\, and “good trouble!”
