SUMMARY:Keeper's Retirement Party
DESCRIPTION:There will be a party for Keeper at the library at 4:00 pm on Thursday\, August 17 if you want to stop by to wish him well. \nUnfortunately\, he will need to take a break from his listening duties due to a health issue. He has been diagnosed with a seizure condition and is in the process of figuring out how best to manage it. He is doing very well and feels great\, but his doctor recommends that he stop his therapy dog activities and enjoy an early retirement. \nFor the past couple of years Keeper has immensely enjoyed listening to the readers at the Putney Library. He particularly enjoyed all the cuddles and hugs he got!

SUMMARY:Artist's Reception for Portals\, Paintings by Liz Hawkes deNiord
DESCRIPTION:Putney Public Library Exhibits: Portals\, Paintings by Liz Hawkes deNiord \nPortals\, a series of abstract paintings by Liz Hawkes deNiord\, is on exhibit at The Putney Putney Library\, September 4 – December 2\, 2023. \nLiz’s dynamic paintings reflect her immersion in the physical process as well as her love of saturated\, radiant color and luminosity. The paintings are both dreamlike and grounded. Her process is one of multiple layering\, scraping\, covering up\, and building up heavily textured surfaces with palette knife and paint. The paintings emerge layered with pure colors creating an iridescent quality. \nShe says\, “What lies beneath each one is essential to what one sees on the surface. Working mostly on large vertical canvases\, the vertical alignment resonates as a physical presence…..The paintings evolve through layers\, through rotation of the canvas and through a suspended trust in the outcome to ‘pay attention’ consciously and unconsciously.” \nLiz Hawkes deNiord is a painter\, ceramic artist\, and educator – having taught for 38 years in Vermont\, Connecticut\, Iowa and Virginia. Locally\, she taught Ceramics at The Putney School\, Drawing at Landmark College. For over two decades she taught Foundations in Art\, Sculpture and Ceramics at Brattleboro Union High School. A Studio Art major and Asian Studies minor in college\, Liz took two masters degrees in Education\, one in Learning Disabilities\, which enabled her to tutor and or teach in schools\, prisons or psych hospitals\, and the other in Art Education. \nLiz works in her Westminster West studio and currently shows her work regionally in Manchester and Burlington\, Vermont. For more information on Liz and her work see: www.lizhawkesdeniord.com \nLiz will have a reception for her show on Saturday\, September 23rd from 1pm-3pm at the library. \nPutney Public Library is located at 55 Main St. in Putney\, VT. This exhibit is free and open to the public Monday-Friday 10:30am-6pm\, Saturday in September and October 10am-1pm and Saturdays in November 10am-3pm.

SUMMARY:The Putney Mountain Hawkwatch: 50 Years Counting Hawks
DESCRIPTION:The Putney Mountain Hawkwatch: 50 Years Counting Hawks\nWednesday\, October 11th at 7pm at Putney Public Library \nEach Fall\, an intrepid bunch of people heads up Putney Mountain with one goal in mind – count as many hawks and vultures as they can\, regardless of the weather. For 50 years\, volunteers have made this trek\, enjoying the view\, the company\, but most importantly\, the drama of the hawk migration. Join members of the group on Wednesday\, October 11th at 7pm at Putney Public Library to hear about the Hawkwatch’s history\, the data it gathers\, and how you can get more involved! \nIn 1974\, volunteers counted 519 birds on just four days. But this count represented 21% of all birds seen at the 10 statewide lookout sites in Vermont that year. Fifty years later someone is counting birds on Putney Mountain every day from late August to November 10th \, rivaling the coverage in nearby sites with paid watchers. And the birds keep coming\, thrilling the watchers with their sheer numbers\, ambition\, and aerial antics. It has to be experienced. \nThe data collected on Putney Mountain is added to that from approximately 200 affiliated raptor monitoring sites and organized by the Hawk Migration Association of North America\, providing a near-real-time international database of hawk counts across the continent. The year-to-year data can be accessed by anyone on hawkcount.org . \nPutney Public Library is located at 55 Main St. in Putney\, VT. This program is free and open to the public.
